Football is a national obsession in Mallorca and Spain.

Every Sunday during the winter season (Sept-March) football games take place all over the island, even the smallest village will have a football team.

Mallorca’s main football teams are based in Palma.

Real Mallorca (RCD Mallorca) play at ONO Estadi, whilst CD Atlético Baleares play in Estadi Atletico. Real Mallorca play regularly against teams such as Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Real Mallorca FC

 

Real Club Deportivo Mallorca, S.A.D. is a Spanish football team from Palma de Mallorca. Founded on 5 March 1916, it currently plays in the Spanish first division. Mallorca plays in red shirts and black shorts with black socks. Their home stadium is the ONO Estadi, seating 23,142 spectators.

The oldest club in the Balearic Islands, Mallorca was originally formed by Adolfo Vázquez, a republican engineer, who named the club Junta Directiva del Alfonso XIII FBC after the then king. The first stadium, inaugurated on 25 March, was called the Buenos Aires, with a match against Barcelona (which Barcelona won 8-0).

A year later, the club changed its name to Real Sociedad Alfonso XIII, which remained until the club was renamed in 1931, for political reasons, Club Deportivo Mallorca. The Real prefix was added in 1949.

In its history, the team has spent 20 seasons in Primera División, 29 in Segunda División, 2 in Segunda División B and 11 in Tercera División.

It was announced on 22 July 2008, that 96% of the club's shares had been purchased for over GBP50 million by controversial English businessman Paul Davidson.

Club Deportivo Atlético Baleares is a football team based in Palma de Mallorca, in the autonomous community of Balearic Islands. Founded in 1942, it currently plays in the Segunda División B - Group 3. Its stadium is Estadio Balear, with a capacity of 23,000 seats.
